Alberta’s Defeat of Rouge et Or Women’s Basketball Ends an Era

Quebec City (Quebec) 15 March 2015 – In a duel Friday night at PEPS, the Alberta Pandas overcame fierce opposition from the Rouge et Or, which they defeated 62-50 in the consolation semifinal women’s basketball championship. The loss not only puts an end to Laval’s season, but also the 30-year career of coach Linda Marquis at Laval University.

The score was tight for most of the match.  Both teams fought hard until the Western Canada bronze medalists pulled ahead with about four minutes to left play. The Rouge et Or completed the national tournament in seventh place, the same result they had obtained their last appearance in 2011.

Caught in a whirlwind of emotions, Linda Marquis took the time to congratulate her players for the effort tonight. “It was a great match played; girls can feel proud,” she said.

Seeming much less nervous than the previous day’s match against the Windsor Lancers, the Rouge et Or players had a strong early game. Jane Gagné roared the PEPS crowd from Laval’s first possession with a three-point shot. Despite a marked physical advantage, the Pandas did not managed take an early advantage against Laval, a team known for its defense. After 10 minutes, it was a 13-13 tie. The intensity level remained high in the second quarter, as both teams delivered a solid defensive performances. By halftime, the home team had a slim 24-23 advantage.

The epic confrontation continued into the third quarter. Neither Pandas nor the Rouge et Or were able to escape, the gap never being greater than three points. The carpet began to slip under the feet of Laval midway in the fourth quarter. Saskia VanGinhoven has made her presence felt under the basket, recovering many offensive rebounds and converting her throws, in addition to being perfect in three attempts at the free-throw line. It thus rose quickly from a score of 38-38 after three quarters to an advance of 15 points for the Pandas, who ultimately took the game and continue their road one more day.
