An Insight Into Some Of The Most Powerful Women In Canada

In what appears to be a fierce and competitive market, The Women’s Executive Network have put together a list of Canada’s most powerful and inspirational women. The annual selection process showcases women from a plethora of different fields, such as those who work in arts and communication, young female leaders, those who run their own businesses, to name but a few.

The Founder of the Network, Pamela Jeffery, explains that she started this network with the aim of finding inspirational role models for young women. Nominations are open for this year’s shortlist and examples from last year include powerhouses such as Wendy Freeman, Jennifer Tory and Julie Delahanty.

What is perhaps most inspirational to young women is being able to look at these key Canadian females and see that they are all well-known for different reasons and for different achievements. They have worked hard in their chosen field and help demonstrate to young women that the opportunities are endless and there are no limitations.

Wendy Freeman is a Canadian-American astronomer, famous for her Hubble Constant, the unit of measurement which documents the expansion of the Universe. This ambitious astronomer and pianist has been recognised for her leadership skills and contributions to Science. Her commitment to research and development also contributed to her election as a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, as we read on her University of Chicago profile.

Jennifer Tory is responsible for RBC’s banking businesses in Canada, The United States and the Caribbean. She has lead large teams in providing financial advice and services and has also held many executive sales management roles. In addition, Tory was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2013 and has been praised for her commitment to the community and charitable causes, such as Sunnybrook Hospital and Free the Children. Proving inspirational to all those who may have felt held back in what they could achieve, Tory received the Catalyst Canada Honour for championing women in business.

However, this list is by no means exhaustive and does not include many other leading ladies such as Xuan Liu- a graduate of Waterloo University in Canada. This was in fact where the magic happened for Xian; the poker hothouse where she organised games bringing in a following from big names such as Michael Watts, Steve Paul and Michael McDonald. Upon leaving college, Liu continued to play live games, enjoying great success and amassing a fortune of well over $80,000, as we read on her 888poker “Queens of Hearts” profile. She has competed at esteemed places such as NAPT LA and EPT Barcelona and is perhaps most famous for winning an EPT San Remo €1,000 event for €48,000.

These women all have varied backgrounds, professions and skills, yet all possess the drive to succeed and contribute which is an important lesson for the younger female generations – proving that women are just as capable of achieving their goals.
