Anger on 3e Avenue as Hydro-Québec Turns Out the Lights

Quebec City (Quebec) September 13, 2014 – Shop owners on Limoilou’s trendy 3e avenue are angry over a decision by Hydro-Québec to shut down the street’s electricity for a full day Tuesday this week. In order to perform maintenance on electrical infrastructure in the area, Hydro-Québec notified business owners and residents of 3e avenue between 4e rue and 6e rue that power would be cut to their buildings from 8:30AM to 4:00PM this coming Tuesday.

For the 21 business owners affected, this is very bad news. The SDC Limoilou, which groups business owners of the area, argues the loss of the day will collectively represent losses between 600,000$ and 800,000$.  Many business owners are also frustrated at having received barely a week’s notice, saying this does not give them the time necessary to advise their clients and reschedule their employees. The SDC has asked Hydro-Québec to consider rescheduling their maintenance to less busy hours (such as at night), but this goes against Hydro-Québec’s policies and citing extra complications in needing to work with Bell’s telecommunications wires.
