Angus Bell Brings The QHS School Roof Down

Angus Bell Brings The QHS School Roof Down

Part book promotion. Part comedy act. That’s probably the best way to describe Angus Bell’s performance at Quebec High School last night (Thursday 21st October 2010).

An audience of around 35 or so supporters attended the AngloStore.com event and heard the young author talk of his latest piece of work…

Batting on the Bospohorus – ‘A Liquor-Fueled Cricket Tour Through Eastern Europe’.

Angus made the audience sit up and take note with the opening line

‘It all started at a psychic exposition in old Montreal when a dead ringer for George Lucas – a safety goggles salesman by day and a shaman by night – claimed to be channelling messages from the ghost of my Great Uncle Ivor…’

What followed was a 16,000 kms drive around 17 former Soviet Bloc and Warsaw Pact countries (and Germany) in a battered old Skoda.

Along the way, the intrepid explorer spent the night in a haunted guesthouse in the Harz mountains, visited an unqualified Romanian dentist, held up a bank in Belarus for 70 cents and (allegedly) bribed Ukranian police officers.

Originally from Scotland, the  (now Montreal-based) author also fielded questions about his life, writing, his reasons for being in Quebec.

This prompted tales of gardening in Transylvania, a stint in a Glasgow methadone clinic and working as a security guard in a Quebec chocolate factory.

As I’m sure everyone who attended will agree, Angus Bell was immense value for money and he had the crowd laughing uncontrollably for well over an hour. You’d pay good money to see that in a comedy club. Maybe you will one day.

At the end of the talk, Angus signed copies of his book for those who wished to purchase a copy.*

Event organiser Andrew Greenfield, then finished off the evening by thanking Quebec High School principal Warren Thomson and school staff Ed and Carol Sweeney (without whom this would not have taken place).

* A percentage of the sale of each book went towards the QHS school library.

There is still time to grab a signed copy of Angus’ book as AngloStore.com has a few left.
(Available from all good booksops, including Quebec City English Bookstore

, AngloStore.com).
