Anything Goes in Quebec City

QAC brings the Cole Porter classic Anything Goes to the stage

QAC_SailorsGet ready to sail away with the Quebec Art Company on a musical tour of high seas comedy.  Yes, the QAC is putting the final touches on its production of Anything Goes with dancing sailors, prancing Angels and loads of romantic comedy.  The time is the 1930s and the setting is the luxury cruise ship the SS American.  The main attraction is Reno Sweeney (Rosie Sabor), an evangelist turned nightclub singer and her Angels, a strange mix of salvation and seduction indeed.  Things get complicated when Billy Crocker (Michael Bourguignon), the man Reno loves, sneaks on board as a stowaway, not to see Reno but to instead court another lady, Ms. Hope Harcourt (Kelly Leigthon, a New York debutant.   Billy colludes with a hapless gangster, Moonface Martin (Larry Hodgson), and his sidekick Erma (Sharon MacLeod) to hide his identity but ends up being identified as Public Enemy #1.  The troubles and surprises are only beginning…

First produced on Broadway in 1934, the show was an immediate success in spite of last-minute rewriting to avoid making light of a recent maritime disaster.  Since then, the musical has undergone extensive modifications for multiple revivals, the most recent in 2011.  Indeed, Anything Goes is so popular that this is the QAC’s second production of the show, the first being in 1993.   Executive President Cheryl Rimmer is producer, and Mark Lepitre is at the helm as director, accompanied by musical directors Susan Stewart and Hugh Glassco and choreographers Damarise Ste. Marie and Lisa Shortt.  As usual with QAC biennial musicals, there are many others working both on stage, back stage, and off stage.

Back this year is the Saturday Gala, a wine-and-cheese affair that will give the audience, cast and crew the opportunity to meet and relax after the show.  Performances will be held at Holland School, 940, ave Ernest-Gagnon, in Quebec City on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 28-29) at 8:00 p.m. The Saturday (Nov. 30) performance will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the Gala to immediately follow. The Sunday performance will be held at 2:00 p.m.  Tickets are $10 (student/senior/group) and $12 (general) with an additional $10 for the gala. You are encouraged to reserve your tickets by calling (418) 254-6552. Bon Voyage!
