Oral tradition—the transmission of beliefs and history through verbal storytelling—is common among Canada’s indigenous cultures. Many of Canada’s first immigrants also brought with them the practice of sharing knowledge orally, rather than keeping written records.

This is how the story of Robert Corrigan has been maintained in the small Québec town of Saint-Sylvestre, southwest of Québec City. In his first book, Hill Search, Steven Cameron combines oral testimonies with archival research in an attempt to correct some elements and add new ones to the popular story of Corrigan’s mysterious death in 1855.

At the time, Saint-Sylvestre was a newly settled community on Craig’s Road, built earlier in the century to connect Québec City and Boston. Many of the residents were Irish immigrants who brought the religious antagonisms of their homeland with them. These tensions play a large part in the events leading up to Corrigan’s death, the subsequent trial and the shaping of the community thereafter.

The search for the truth behind Corrigan’s story spread through the press and drew responses from the regional government.
