Review by Job Patstone

This book was first published in French in 2014 as Portrait de famille, and caused quite a stir among francophone Quebecers at the time. The author is a Québécois federalist who attempts to explain, through statistics, some misconceptions that francophone Quebecers have of themselves. I would consider this book required reading for every Canadian and Quebecer, no matter what their first language.

Dubuc backs up his analogies through statistics gathered from around the world, comparing Québec to the other nine provinces and to other Western countries. He tackles Québec’s education system, its healthcare system, its environmental programs and its culture, examining every aspect of the “Québec model.” The book addresses 14 different aspects of life in Québec, and by extension, also in the rest of Canada.

Dubuc’s book outlines Québec’s progress since the dramatic social upheaval that came with the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s. His analysis is extremely comprehensive and unbiased. He separates the good from the bad and shows that despite lower wages and higher taxes, Quebecers are among the happiest people in the world.

In essence, the book shows how Québec is more similar to the rest of Canada than many Quebecers realize, and that the status quo may not be so bad after all.
