Review by Nathalie Peron

Kersti Kuusk returns to her elite Swiss boarding school two decades after graduation, as an invited guest for the school’s 100th anniversary celebrations.
A mysterious letter from a recently departed school friend piques Kersti’s curiosity and drives her to discover what truly happened the night of her best friend Cressida’s suspicious death at the school so many years before. Was it suicide, was she pushed or did she fall? And in any case, what could possibly have happened for it to come to this?

Unable to let go of Cressida, Kersti struggles with her own perceived inadequacies and tries to unearth what has been carefully buried by time and by people with something to hide. She believes Cressida, despite her flaws, deserves as much.

Alternating between the present time and Kersti’s school years, the story is always told in the present, creating for the reader a multilayered sense of being there, seeing the sights and getting to know the complex characters in the unfolding drama.

Joanna Goodman’s fourth novel, The Finishing School is a compelling mystery that is hard to put down; it hooks you from the start all the way to the unexpected end.
