Title: The Measure of Darkness
Author: Liam Durcan
Publisher: Bellevue Literary Press
Review by Mary Hansen
Martin Fallon is a broken man. After an encounter with a plow on a snowy rural roadway, he has woken up with a shattered body and a mind full of questions —questions he’s not sure he wants to answer.
Since Fallon has no current significant other, and his relationships with his children are strained, it falls to his estranged brother to care for him. The rekindling of their fraternal relationship leads both men to remember and reconsider their past in order to find a new path for the future.
Liam Durcan’s thoughtful and surprisingly well-crafted novel depicts Fallon’s interconnected emotional journeys as a man recovering from a traumatic event, a middle-aged workaholic whose career has peaked, an ambitious and talented architect now unable to practice his craft, and a failed husband, father and brother.
Durcan’s scientific background is evident in the precision of his descriptions and the depth of his analysis of the novel’s characters. And yet, the soul of a writer shines through on every page. Durcan’s evocative imagery, talent for showing the multiple facets of human struggle, and seamless narrative structure are the marks of a true artist. Rarely does a modern novel resonate so well on so many levels.
