MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens assigned rookie right winger Michael McCarron to the St. John’s IceCaps of the American Hockey League on Tuesday.

Right winger Devante Smith-Pelly was expected to return from injury for a game Tuesday night in Minnesota.

McCarron, 20, played his first two NHL games this week but did not record a point or even a shot in losses at Dallas and Nashville. He was picked 25th overall by Montreal in the 2013 draft.
