Carnaval de Québec Launches With Pomp

Quebec City (Quebec) January 31, 2015 – Between 2000 and 4000 people braved the chilling cold and whistling winds to see the launch of the 61st edition of the Carnaval de Québec.

Under the theme of “Éclats de Glace”, the Plains of Abraham were host to the grand opening ceremonies, which included many of the traditions, both old and new, of the Carnaval.  Bonhomme was of course the star of the evening, drawing cheers and chants from his adoring fans.  The ceremony began at 7PM with a stunning performance by ice sculpting artist Michel Lepire, who turned a block of ice into an ornate snowflake before the very eyes of the crowd.

Not long afterwards, the duchesses were brought to the stage.  Having been absent for 17 years, the traditional duchesses competition was brought back last year to the delight of many.  This year, the honour of the crown was awarded to Marie-Andrée Boucher, duchesse of Sainte-Foy-Sillery-Cap-Rouge.  She was visibly overjoyed as Bonhomme crowned her queen of the Carnaval.

For those willing to brave the enduring bite of the cold, music and dancing continued throughout the evening until 11PM.
