Catherine Dufour – Kitesurfing for a Championship

No one can blame Catherine Dufour of a lack of ambition. Practicing a marginal and unknown sport, kitesurfing, the athlete from l’Île aux Coudres set herself a challenge: become 2015 kitesurf world champion.

Kitesurfing is a sail sport combined with a surfing sport. It can be practiced on water (kitesurf) or on snow (snowkite). It is a discipline still unknown in Quebec and Canada, since it started about ten years ago. After starting a snowkite career in 2009, Catherine Dufour concentrates almost uniquely on kitesurf. She hopes to become Quebec Champion in 2013, then North-American in 2014, before reaching the world elite.

She gained popularity with snowkite by becoming Quebec champion, then double vice world champion where she participated in mixed competitions, but she stilled decided to make the transition to kitesurfing. She thought the circuit was way more developed and there was more potential for her on water. She certainly didn’t have trouble adapting! One month after the change, she became Canadian vice-champion and she realised that with training and hard work, she could reach the world elite.
