Challenge de l’espoir launched in Place d’Youville

Fifteen years after its conception in Place D’Youville, the Challenge de l’espoir was launched again on Tuesday. More than 80 teenagers and young adults must cover 1,000km to reach Percé in Gaspésie for July 5th.

The Challenge is more than cycling and thousands of steps. It is also an event to increase self-esteem and promote integration. Half of the participants are immigrants. The others mainly come from downtown, Limoilou, Vanier high school, where the quitting rate is the highest in the region. Most have learning and behavioural problems and they are trying to start over.

Half of the people who left on Tuesday will reach the final destination. The 40 others will stop at Bic before coming back to Quebec. They will have to run 10 km before cycling 70 km every day.

This is a great challenge for those teenagers who, for the most part, are not athletes. 70 of the 80 bicycles have been lent to the participants. This means that they don’t usually have bikes and they are not used to doing physical activity every day.

We wish them good weather and courage to reach their goal.
