Chalmers-Wesley United Church Launches Major Fund-Raising Campaign

Chalmers-Wesley Church, located on rue Sainte-Ursule in Quebec City, has officially launched its major fund-raising campaign, presided over by honorary chairman Peter W. Webster.

The church’s graceful spire dominates the skyline near the Château Frontenac and the Citadel. Built in 1853 in the historic Old Town, this imposing Neo-Gothic structure is part of the fabric of the architectural, cultural and religious heritage of Quebec. And, like all older buildings, it is vulnerable to the ravages of time. Repairs to the tower are now urgently needed due to damage caused by water seepage.

Recognized by the Conseil du patrimoine religieux du Québec as a “Class A” heritage building, Chalmers-Wesley is home to one of the few English-language congregations worshipping in Quebec City. In addition, the congregation opened their doors in 1987 to a French-language parish, Église unie Saint-Pierre.

In the past 15 years, much work has been done on the building: replacing the copper roof, repairing stone walls and buttresses, and restoring the historic stained-glass windows, to name the most important. The latest round of work began in 2009: the spire was repaired inside and out and covered with stainless steel; also, a stone pinnacle that had fallen from the tower during a winter storm, damaging the new copper roof, was replaced and the roof repaired.

Major repairs to the stonework of the tower’s facade have been proceeding this year but, because of insufficient funds, the work on the rest of the tower has had to be postponed until next year.

Thanks to the recent grant from the Conseil du patrimoine religieux du Québec of $535,854 and a generous donation from the R. Howard Webster Foundation, Chalmers-Wesley hopes to complete its restoration work next year.

However, the church still has a long way to go to pay its portion of the cost of the work. The goal of the campaign is to raise a total of $1,000,000. The members of Chalmers-Wesley’s major fund-raising campaign cabinet therefore invite the people of Quebec, together with charitable organizations, foundations and businesses, to give generously to help complete the restoration of this magnificent religious heritage building.
