Daylight Savings Time 2017: 58% of Quebecers Will Take up to a Week to Adapt

There is no doubt mornings are busy, and this is even truer when the Spring Daylight Savings Time occurs – when we lose an hour in our day. Recent Quebec poll uncovered how it impacts the morning routine, in particular for families

MONTRÉAL, March 6, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ – A recent survey reveals that Daylight Savings Time has a negative effect on the behaviour and mindset of Quebec’s population. According to the poll, Quebecers experience difficulty to wake up (35%), lack of energy (31%) and irritability (13%) when the clock turns forward. The survey commissioned by Bon Matin bread indicates that on March 12, more than half (58%) of the population will take from one day to a full week to adjust to the time change.

“Many of us are already sleep deprived all year long (work, children, social life, etc.), therefore losing a precious hour in dreamland is dreadful and can cause sleep disturbance, mood swings, and loss of appetite. As if it wasn’t enough, my children and my husband also develop the same symptoms as mine. Since we’ve put into practice a few adjustments in our life, it makes Daylight Savings Time change much easier!” says Isabelle Racicot, a mother of two and spokesperson of Bon Matin®.

Losing sleep is challenging in most Quebec households

With our busy lives and especially during mornings, the tiredness due to one hour less of sleep does have an impact. Almost three-quarters of families (72%) mention they need between a day and a week to get used to Daylight Savings Time. Knowing how most parents are already sleep deprived, it is not surprising to learn that more than half of parents (54%) said they would like to invest this lost hour toward sleep.

There is no doubt that mornings are sometimes challenging for young families, and this is even truer when we lose an hour of sleep. Between getting the kids dressed, breakfast made, work emails, lunches packed and even dinner planned, it can be difficult to enjoy the simple pleasure of a morning meal together. Nearly half (48%) of parents polled said that they rarely or never eat breakfast with at least one of their family members during the week. This would explain why a third (31%) of families would like to spend more time with their loved ones, like eating breakfast together.

“I have noticed that my boys tend to be famished when the time changes in the spring, so I plan more substantial breakfasts. No matter how busy our mornings are, we always take the time to eat breakfast together. Small adjustments can make a big difference when it comes to Daylight Savings Time

To ease the negative impacts of the Daylight Savings Time, healthy life habits can help support this change. Here are a few tips to make the transition smoother in Quebec households:
Prepare and take time to eat a delicious and healthy breakfast. Find interesting recipe ideas for a filling breakfast with healthy bread with no artificial flavor or color, such as Bon Matin bread;
Avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine before bedtime;
Engage in calm and relaxing activities such as taking a bath or reading a good book one hour before going to bed;
At night time, avoid the artificial light of tablets, computers, TV, a few hours before going to bed;
Try as much as possible to go to bed and get up every day at the same time.
