Ellie Black in first place after qualifying at Canadian Championships

MONTREAL — Ellie Black sits in first place after the qualifying round of the Canadian Championships in artistic gymnastics on Thursday.

Black posted an all-around qualifying score of 55.517 to sit ahead of fellow Rio Olympian Rose Kaying Woo of Brossard, Que.

The Halifax native is participating in her first all-around competition since the Rio Olympics.

The 21-year-old Black captured three silver medals last weekend at the FIG World Challenge Cup, placing second on the beam, floor and uneven bars.

Ana Padurariu of Whitby, Ont., dominated the junior competition and is sitting first overall with 55.567 points following qualification. Padurariu finished first on all four apparatuses and leads Emma Spence of Cambridge, Ont., by more than four points.

The junior and senior women will compete in the all-around and apparatus finals on Saturday.
