End of an era – Last movie shown at Saint Nicolas drive-In

St-Nicolas (Quebec) 02 September, 2014 – The last movie ever to be presented at the 44 year old drive-in theatre in Saint Nicolas, on the south shore, was shown on Sunday August 31 to a nostalgic crowd of about 100 people. The regular drive-in die-hards showed up to bid farewell to the old theatre which has been a landmark in the area for over 40 years.

The site had been threatening to close down for the last few years but, as sad as it may be, the reality has finally come.

The last box of popcorn has been sold, the last hot dog has been eaten, and the last picture show has been screened, leaving nothing left but an empty parking lot and a really big screen. The only drive-in theatre left, close to Quebec City, is in the Boucherville area, which is about a 2 hour drive from Saint Nicolas.

It’s the end of an era for some of the regulars and they wanted to be there for the last presentation despite the threatening weather conditions. One family even showed up in their 1947 Dodge bragging that the kids could sit up front because the old bench seat was wide enough for everyone including the dog, just like in the good old days. Cleaning the windshield with Windex too, was always a must, once you’d found that perfect parking spot.

The last movie on the screen was Guardians of the Galaxy in French of course.

The land has been turned over to a developer for a housing project.
