ESLTN February Meeting News

ESLTN February Meeting News

by Elizabeth Davies

Another inspiring meeting held last Friday at Saint Lawrence College.  The theme of the evening was ‘What’s the talk around the water cooler’? Being an ESL teacher in the Québec City area is an absolutely exhilarating way of earning a living!

Scrumptious desserts generously brought in to be shared with Genevieve, Sharon, Lori, Julie, Coleen, Sandra, Linda, and Elizabeth (the photographer).

I have the opportunity to teach people from many professions, which makes it an equally rewarding learning experience for me!

There are many plusses to this job and the Québec City area is peppered with many ESL (English Second Language) teachers. At times though, we sometimes feel isolated from our peers.

Our irregular schedules prevent us from being in contact with each other on a daily or let alone weekly basis.

Whether we are employed by a school or self-employed, it is fundamental  to share ideas, tips, advice, and other ressources.
ESLTN is the solution….these monthly meetings have become indispensable for me!

Take a look at some of the goals of the network:

Developing workshops and information sessions designed to meet the needs expressed by the members. There is a strong interest in pedagogical workshops and several people have stepped forward offering to lead such workshops. Other topics might include learning more about the steps to become self-employed (accreditation by Emploi-Quebec, accounting, marketing, etc.).
Crash courses on the ESL experience may also be developed.

Developing a handbook which will include information about various regional language schools, provide clarification of exclusivity and contracts, propose a list of questions for initial job interviews, explain unemployment insurance, demystify self-employment and whatever else members propose and contribute.

Exploring the economic viability of teaching ESL in the Quebec region.

Developing structure within the ESLTN.

Collaboration with groups within the community.

Dissemination of information concerning the ESLTN through the website, newsletter, mailing and phone lists, etc.

There are now 15 members and meetings are held on Fridays once a month at Champlain-St-Lawrence College in the staff lounge
790, Nérée-Tremblay, Sainte-Foy.
