Fatal accident on Val-Belair construction site

Val-Belair (Quebec) 28 October 2014 – A man was killed Monday while working on a demolition site in Val-Belair much to the shock of his fellow workers. The man was an experienced construction worker in his fifties.

It was a section of a wall that fell on the victim and pinned him to the floor of the building most likely crushing his body in the chest area. No apparent signs of injury could be seen as the paramedics tried to revive the individual.

He was pronounced dead upon his arrival at the hospital.

Heavy motorised equipment was used to free the man by lifting the wall section off his body but, it was obviously too late to save him.

His co-workers were all in a state of disbelief and two of them had to be taken to hospital to be treated for nervous shock and psychological support.

Since 2009 there have been 8 fatal accidents, including this week’s, on job-sites in the Quebec City area.

There were two in 2009, one each in 2010 and 2011 and three in 2012.

The CSST (Quebec Workman’s Compensation Board) is investigating the accident like they do with all accidental deaths in the construction industry.

Most accidents on construction sites are caused by falling debris or heavy machinery misuse according to the Board. At the time of posting the deceased had not yet been identified pending notification to relatives.
