Father sues Doctor and Pharmacist for Son’s Death

Quebec City (Quebec) August 14, 2014 – In August of 2011, François Coté and his son Auriel went to the doctor’s office at Clinique Médicale St. Louis to have Auriel diagnosed for severe headaches and shoulder pain. Auriel had been suffering such symptoms for seven years following a mild concussion. At this particular visit the headaches had become extremely severe and were causing Auriel to suffer acute depression at the same time. The doctor quickly asked for a neurological examination and in the interim prescribed morphine and fentanyl to ease the pain until he could see the neurologist.

That night Auriel went to bed after taking a morphine pill and applying a fetanyl patch to his forehead. The next day, Auriel was found dead in his bed later in the afternoon. The coroner’s report suggests that he died of an involuntary medical intoxication caused by the rapid absorption of fentanyl which affected his respiratory function causing death.

François Coté is suing for more than $200,000 stating that the medical personnel involved should have warned Auriel about the consequences of the prescribed medication and that no advice was given as how to take the drugs or even if there was other food or beverages which could alter the reaction of the medication on one’s body, which according to him was a lack of professionalism. Auriel had apparently consumed a moderate amount of alcohol before going to bed, which may or may not have changed the effects of the drugs.

François Coté has not returned to work since his son’s death and is suing the two medical professionals for $203,000, $150,000 of which is for damages to his morale.
