Fire at the Museum of Civilisation

Quebec City (Quebec) September 15, 2014 – Fire broke out at Quebec City’s Musée de la Civilisation at around 12:45 this afternoon.

At time of posting, around 4.40pm, the firefighters had managed to get the fire under control. It became a 4 alarm fire when flames started soaring out from the top story windows.

Eyewitnesses say the fire started from a motor used to operate scaffolding that is being used to renovate the museum.

Agnes Dufour, the media spokesperson for the museum, says none of the displays presently on exhibit have been damaged as the fire was contained to the top floor of the building.

There is concern however for one exhibit adjacent to the origin of the fire that may have smoke or water damage which will be evaluated once the employees’ renter the building.

Approximately 200 people were in the building at the time, all of whom have been evacuated and accounted for.

No injuries have been reported. Fortunately the museum is closed on Mondays so no visitors were affected by the incident; nor were any workers who were involved with the renovation work.

An inquiry as to the origin of the fire has already begun.
