Fire Claims 11 Apartments in Saint-Sauveur

2014-08-24 Fire

Quebec City (Quebec) August 24, 2014 – About 15 people had to evacuate their apartment building last night as heavy smoke and fire alarms sounded the emergency. The building at 613 rue Napoléon in the Saint-Sauveur district was taken by flames.

Just a little past midnight, residents called firefights to the scene. When firefighters arrived, they quickly saw the flames risked spreading to nearby buildings and ordered the evacuation of eight other adjoining apartment blocks as a preventative measure. It took a large team of 35 firefighters most of the night to fight and extinguish the flames. Those evacuated from nearby buildings were able to safely re-enter their homes once the fire was doused, but the residents of the 11 apartments in the building where the fire started were taken care of by the Red Cross, but the apartment is a complete loss and residents will have to be relocated. Total damages are estimated at 200,000$.

Police initially apprehended a man under suspicion of arson, but the man was later released and authorities do not seem to be exploring foul play as a possible scenario at this time.
