FOUR RUNS IN FIRST WIN IT FOR QUEBEC

July 30 Night Recap

Quebec 5, Newark 2Box

The Capitales put up four runs in the top of the first inning, and that was all they would need to beat Newark, 5-2. 3B Jonathan Malo led off Quebec-Capitales_BB_Playerthe game with a double and scored on an error on the next pitch. Then, CF Sebastien Boucher hit a ground-rule double, and 1B Josue Peley (pictured) singled to bring home SS Jeff Helps and Boucher. Peley would later score on a groundout to make it 4-0.

Quebec starter Shawn Smith (1-0) pitched well in his first appearance, allowing just one earned run on five hits through seven innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

After a turbulent first inning, Newark RHP Mike Ness (3-4) settled in. He threw eight innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits, though he committed the error that set up Quebec’s three unearned runs. Quebec scored its only run after the first inning in the fifth, when LF Royce Consigli knocked an RBI double.

Bears’ 1B Ernie Banks Jr. accounted for all of Newark’s scoring, hitting an RBI single in the first and leading off the sixth with a solo home run.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, closer Chris Cox loaded the bases before striking out Newark 3B Joseph Poletsky to notch his 17th save.
