Free OSQ Concert to Kick Off The Season

Quebec, August, 2012 – It is with great pleasure that the Quebec Symphony Orchestra invites the public to celebrate the beginning of its 2012-2013 season.

The OSQ concert promises much energy and life to highlight the official start of the new Executive Musical Director, Fabien Gabel’s tenure.

A world-renowned guest will join the Orchestra for this great evening, violinist James Ehnes, who will perform Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto for the occasion, one of the greatest concertos of the repertoire, but also one of the most frequently performed works by the German composer.

Also on the opening concert program, the follow up to the Chevalier à la rose symphony from Richard Strauss, which will transport the audience to the Vienne insouciante de Marie-Thérèse. The evening will end with the sound of Ravel’s La Valse, work from the Russian ballets from Serge Diaghilev, but, the symphonic version remains a masterpiece.

The New Leader…

Fabien Gabel is one of the most sought after of his generation. Invited by the world’sgreatest orchestras, he is a Donatella Flick à Londres contest winner, which allowed him to lead the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre, and then be part of the staff as assistant until 2006 with Sir Colin Davis and Bernard Haitink.

And the expert…

Born in Manitoba, James Enhnes has played in over thirty countries. He regularly performs with the world’s leading orchestras and is holder of the Peter Mennin Prize for his exceptional work and his leadership when performing his musical skills.

He has also won a Grammy, and six Juno awards for certain recordings.

Concert under the night sky – James Ehnes in a solo intermission!

Given last year’s success,  the inaugural concert will simultaneously be projected on a giant screen outside the Grand Théâtre de Québec; a gift from the OSQ to allow the general public to freely enjoy this unique musical event with the new boss, Fabien Gabel, part of the Rendez-vous Loto-Québec.

Whether there’s good or bad weather on the day, during the intermission, James Ehnes will deliver his own interpretation of a surprise piece (you’ll have to be there to see it and hear it)…

Spectators are invited to the event starting at 8pm at the Grand Théâtre de Québec.
