Future Shops Across Canada Close

Quebec City (Quebec) 28 March 2015 – The Future Shop store chain, owned by US retailer Best Buy announced a major restructuring of its stores in Canada. The decision, effective from Saturday, is a result of transforming a part of the Future Shop stores in Best Buy. Many stores, however, should close. Employees were called Saturday morning to receive their termination. Some might be hired by Best Buy.

Best Buy, the largest North American retailer of computer, purchased Future Shop in November 2001. Tony Filato, president of Local 500 of the Union of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), said Saturday that “it was not going well in the Future Shop in recent years,” pointing out that almost twenty stores have been closed during the past years.

In Boucherville, the Future Shop chain closed in June 2014 two stores that were the subject of an application for union certification. “It’s typically American as procedure” stressed at the time Mr. Filato.

One of the employees of the branch of St. Jerome said he was very surprised Saturday morning. “We had our quarterly meeting at 7 am and 7:30 am. They told us that the store would close its doors.”

According to information announced during the meeting, the US retailer closes all Future Shop stores in Canada. “What we realized is that the existing Future Shop stores will be replaced by Best Buy store except in cases where a Best Buy is [located] close,” said the employee, also a student.

In the case of the branch of St. Jerome, the store will be closed for one week to be converted into Best Buy, said the employee in his twenties who was working there part-time since the end of summer.

The chain Future Shop has over 130 stores across Canada, including 27 in Québec. For its part, Best Buy has more than 260 stores nationwide.
