Grand Rire de Québec on the move

Grand Rire de Quebec have been forced to move from the Agora and set up in Place d’Youville. Quebec City has doubled its financial help for the comedy festival to support its move to a new site.

This was confirmed in January since Les chemins invisibles by the Cirque du Soleil was settling in the port for summer. Construction under the Dufferin-Montmorency overpass was making the site not as welcoming for the acrobats and spectators as it should be.

In a document approved Wednesday by the executive committee, it can be seen that the Festival Grand Rire organization accepts to collaborate with the City and change the place where they will hold all their activities. It also asks the City for extra support to be able to perform this change.

During the comedy festival, which will take place from June 12th to 23rd, the organizers want to transform Place d’Youville and rue St-Jean into a show place. Many shows will be held at le Parvis at the Palais Montcalm for people with passes ($15 presale and $20 regular price). The urban animation will make the City vibrate. The accommodation in the Capitole will also be used.

City’s contribution

It contributed $81,000 for the Grand Rire in 2012, and this year, Quebec City accepts to disburse $170,000 to finance the project and $10,000 for the services.

$50,000 must be considered “extra help”. Approximately $5,000 on municipal services can be directly attributed to moving.

In total, the Grand Rire 2013 budget is $6.8 million.
