Historical Society of Quebec Launches Writing Contest

The Historical Society of Quebec has launched its sixth writing contest.

Historian Jacques Lacoursière accepted the honorary presidency of the 2013 edition which is aimed at secondary three and four students.

Honorary President of the 75th anniversary of the Historical Society of Quebec, Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume was pleased to welcome for the occasion, the organization’s president, Jean Dorval.

The participation rate of this contest reveals youth’s interest in history. Issues they mention in their texts are varied and involve their creativity. The historical aspect becomes a trigger that stimulates their imagination.

Invited to speak, Jacques Lacoursière asked every secondary three and four students to participate in this adventure.

With more than 400 years of history, and a few millennia of prehistoric Native American history, Quebec City is filled with many stories. It is up to you to find a person, man, woman, child, or family who have committed acts worthy of being remembered.  You can also find events that can be recalled with a monument or plaque.

Nearly 300 Texts Per Year

This competition emerged with the celebration of Quebec City’s 400th anniversary and the interest has been maintained. It was created to educate the youth about history.

Many high schools participate and more than 300 texts are written every year. A first selection is undergone inside the school which submits a maximum of three texts to the judge of the contest.

All the texts are then evaluated by the jury who determines three winners during the month of May.

The chosen texts are published in the Quebecensia historical journal and prizes worth $850 are distributed to the winners.

Schools wishing to participate have until March 31, 2013 to submit their entries. To know all the rules, just visit the Historical Society of Quebec website. www.societehistoriquedequebec.qc.ca .
