I want my kids to be bilingual

All they want is to make their kids bilingual because their husbands or wives are called every two or three years for a transfer elsewhere in Canada.

Military wives and moms, Isabelle Hébert and Carine Blouin are able to have an everyday conversation or read the menu at a restaurant but don’t know English enough to study or work with it.

Their kids go to an English school, more specifically at DDO (Dollard-des-Ormeaux) in Shannon, Quebec. This is an essential service for them.

From 2004 to 2008, Isabelle’s family (Six children aged 12 to 17-years old) lived in an entirely Anglophone town in New-Brunswick. After three years in the federal capital from 2006-2009, Carine Blouin could be moving with her three kids of 2, 5, and 7-year old to Kingston, Ontario as soon as next year.

It is already hard for the kids to move, sell the house, lose their friends, change school and if they have to worry about the language on top of that, it causes a lot of problems. Mrs. Blouin would not accept to change her kids’ school because they are used to the small family experience which reigns in the small English school, which gathers elementary and high school students. Each grade has only about 30 students. The closest school would be Roger Comtois but she refuses to send her children there because it is too big.

The children live stressful moments when their parents are abroad. At school, at least, they don’t feel lonely in that situation. It is a community and they help each other out.
