Investigation Underway for the Louis Jolliet

Inspectors at the Transportation and Safety Board of Canada (TSB) made an preliminary assessment of the damage to the Louis Jolliet, Friday morning, after the ship ran aground on the western tip of l’Île d’Orléans, Thursday afternoon.

With the first analysis, the damage is concentrated solely on the hull according to Alexandre Bernard Morin, the Communications Advisor for AML Cruises. Remember that the boat was able to return the Chouinard quay by itself late Thursday, when the tide rose.

“Inspectors will we will get back to us this afternoon to tell us whether the ship can resume navigation soon or whether it will be necessary to perform more extensive repairs,” dropped the spokesman.
Investigation Underway

The investigation will be performed by the Transportation Safety Board “Investigators are there to conduct interviews, and to have discussions with the captain and crew,” said John Cottreau Friday morning, a spokesman for the federal organization.

It remains to be seen if an in depth investigation will be conducted in regards to the incident. “This is currently under evaluation. It may take about 72 hours to see the importance of this case. At this point, we are gathering information to determine what our next steps will be,” he added.
No Criminal Penalty

Recall that some of the information suggested that human error is believed to be the cause of the wreck, which had occurred while 57 passengers – all unharmed – were aboard the ship. However, the TSB has no power to determine civil or criminal liability in such cases.

“Our mandate is to determine what was happening and why. To determine whether there are lessons that can be taken in the future of the industry. But we does not make regulations or sanctions. It is Transport Canada or the Ministry of Transportation of Quebec that will,” said Mr. Cottreau.

Cruises maintained

Note that the team of Louis Jolliet was on the boat this morning to pick illustrates Alexandre Morin Bernard “broken crockery.” Regardless of the final decision of the TSB all cruises scheduled Friday and over the next few days will be maintained, but will be transferred to Croisières Lachance and Croisières le Coudrier.
