Irish Heritage Quebec on Grosse Isle 2011

Irish Heritage Quebec’s excursion to Grosse Isle this past Saturday proved to be a great success.

The weather was beautiful with the warm August sun tempered by a good breeze. Sixty-five members and friends of Irish Heritage Quebec were in attendance.

Both The Irish Ambassador Ray Bassett and the US Consul General Peter O’Donohue were present as invited guests of Irish Heritage Quebec.

Mr. Bassett, Mr. O’Donohue and Irish Heritage Quebec’s president, Joe Lonergan, gave brief addresses from the foot of the Celtic Cross. All three touched on the themes of emigration, remembrance and the Great Hunger.

Inevitably the breeze on the grass and the great weather could not completely banish the poignancy that lingers over the mass graves as well as in the fever sheds.

By 4 PM all were back at Berthier sur Mer having honored their ancestors, some of whom lie buried on the island and others who passed through to make their lives in a new land.
