Kathleen Keller’s UNICEF Challenge – Walking For Water

Kathleen Keller’s UNICEF Challenge – Walking For Water

On December 12th, 2010, Quebec City’s Kathleen Keller will attempt the trek up to Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro in support of UNICEF.

The climb will take 6 days, and will take her to a height of 5896 meters. Her goal is to raise at least $602 x 2.

$602 is what it costs to install a water pump for an entire community, reducing the time that women and children spend collecting water, and thus increasing the likelihood of children attending school.

The Laval University student chose UNICEF because she believes that children are the future.

At a basic level, UNICEF saves millions of lives, but she says the purpose of her project goes beyond saving children: Kathleen hopes that those children will benefit from a better and more focused education by lessening their responsibilities and workload within their communities.

Kathleen will also be stopping off in Tanzania where she will be helping out in a Center called Boona Baana.

Located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the Boona-Baana Center operates a series of local projects providing social services, education, medical care and support to orphaned and vulnerable children in Tanzania.

About Kathleen Keller (in her own words):

I am a rugby player for the U. Laval Rouge et Or, the Quebec Senior Women’s provincial team, and the Quebec City team (CRQ). I played for Canada at the junior level. Rugby is my passion but I was stripped of the opportunity to play last June when I tore my ACL (ligament in my knee). Since I couldn’t play rugby anymore + I had been looking for ways to give back + I love to travel, I decided to climb Kilimanjaro for UNICEF as soon as my knee was back in shape. I still can’t play rugby for a while because it requires a lot of unexpected lateral movement, but a climb, I can do! (I also coach rugby at QHS).

Needless to say, I am also a student at Université Laval. I took a semester off to do this project but will be going back in January. I am doing a Bacc. in English Studies and a Certificat de géographie.

Other Info:

Among other interests, I sing in a band The Acousticolics, with my brothers.
