L’Ancienne-Lorette residents upset over helicopter noise

HelicopterSeveral residents living in the town of L’Ancienne-Lorette (Quebec) are up in arms these days about a new noise in their neighbourhood which has reached, according to one resident, the point of being intolerable.

L’Ancienne-Lorette is right next to Quebec City’s International airport and people knew one of the circumstances of moving close to an airport would include the constant rumblings of aircraft coming and going but, the arrival of a new helicopter school and training centre, which has been installed on the edge of the airport, has left some residents fuming.

They had accepted and gotten used to the planes coming and going but the helicopters, which now take off and land on a regular basis due to training and practicing, make more noise than any plane no matter how big. The people affected have set up a committee and have asked the Mayor to inquire if something can be done to at least restrict or reduce the helicopter activity. So far Mayor Émile Loranger has his hands tied because the Complexe Capitale Hélicoptère is on federal land, over which he has no jurisdiction.

Since it is a pilot school and training centre, the frequency of activity is constant throughout the afternoons, with helicopters practicing take offs and landings and even hovering at 300 to 1,000 feet above houses and streets. There are laws in place stating that aircraft have to maintain a flight level of 1,000 ft when flying over houses and buildings but, of course, that does not include the landing and takeoffs which is where the problem arises. The Mayor added that even if the school respects the laws the City has no way of enforcing the rules if they don’t.

Some residents mention that at times the dishes in their cupboards, and the silverware in the drawers, actually vibrate when the choppers are practicing their manoeuvres.
