L’Association des pompiers professionnels de Québec Wins Battle Against Lebeaume Administration

Quebec firefighters were successful in their union battle against their opponents in the Lebeaume administration. Marcel Morin used his powers to force the City of Quebec to pay l’Association des pompiers professionnels de Québec (APPQ), and firefighter union member more than $300,000 in punitive damages for declarations made by Richard Côté en 2009.

The judgment was issued following a complaint filed by the Union in order to obtain compensation for “false accusations and insinuations, misleading and defamatory comments,” made by Richard Côté, Vice-Chairman of the Executive Committee of Quebec City following a television report broadcast on the TVA on March 12th, 2009.

Mr. Côté insinuated that the threats put the population in danger, seeing that it was causing interventions to be delayed.  In conclusion Mr. Morin deemed that the claims were false in his 203-page judgment. Quebec City will compensate the association and firefighters for punitive damages under the Quebec Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In a statement, Eric Gosselin, president of the APPQ, said he “hopes that this decision will be reflected through the  Labeaume administration through its future handling of both the Union and Quebec firefighters.”
