LifeinQuebec.com Competition Time – Test Your Translation Skills

On Wednesday, June 6th, translator Peter McCambridge will be one of three Baraka Books writers at Anglostore discussing his work.

Peter would like to show you how personal any approach to translation is, specifically that if any two people at the talk were to sit down and translate J’haïs le hockey by François Barcelo, he doubts any two sentences in each translation would be exactly the same.

So you are invited to try your hand at translating one sentence in the novel for yourself. This one, in fact:

Si vous avez des enfants, essayez d’en imaginer un, n’importe lequel, de préférence celui ou celle qui a le plus une tête à ça, en train d’assassiner un inconnu ou même votre meilleur ami.

To give you a little bit of context, I Hate Hockey is a dark whodunit, with a quite unlikable narrator trying to work out who killed his son’s hockey coach. This sentence comes at a point in the novel when he decides his son might well be the murderer.

Write down your translation along with your name on a piece of paper and bring it along with you on June 6th. Peter will read out and compare the best ones. The best translation wins a free copy of the book.
