Long-Running Video Store Closes

2014-08-14 BluRay

Quebec City (Quebec) August 14, 2014 – Maybe it’s a sign of the times or maybe it’s just not profitable enough, but the SuperClub Videotron on the corner of Belvédère and Renée Lévesque closed its doors this week instigating a huge sale of DVDs, Blu-Rays and anything else concerning the rental of movies and cinema.

One of the operators of the establishment, M. Serré, said that they were still making money but that the lease was up on the shop and the owner of the building wanted the store to renew its lease for five years. M. Serré is not willing to sign for such a long period of time because of an uncertain future in the film rental business. M. Serré, who runs several SuperClubs around the city states that it is a sign of the times and the future doesn’t look bright unless some stores specialize. People can rent movies directly from their TV sets now and don’t need to go out and use their cars, which is a lot more convenient.

Videotron is also a cable company and offers movies-on-demand through their television network, which is in direct competition with the Superclubs. Movies are also available on the internet and through companies like Netflix and others. Technology is changing the way we watch movies and it’s only going to become more sophisticated as time goes on.
