Earlier this year the fund committee met to decide who should be the recipient of the inaugural Life in Québec Fund Education Grant.

Madeleine Gingras
of Quebec City was chosen to receive this year’s award of $500 to help offset the cost of studies.

We chose Madeleine because:

She will soon begin her Double DEC in Human Sciences (International Studies) at Cégep Limoilou.

In her own words, Madeleine applied for the grant because:

‘I have chosen the double DEC in languages and international studies because I have a passion for the discovery of other cultures and I envisage a career in either diplomacy or another form of international relations.

I have explored this in my recreational activities which include participation (now as an administrator) in a Korean club (Club de Coréen Laval) where I am taking weekly Korean lessons. I have also taken a few basic Mandarin lessons at school. I am in the highest English class at school (studying English literature) and I have been placed at the 103 level for English at Cégep.

I need to save up a lot of money because I want to take part in a study exchange to Europe. This exchange involves a whole semester and includes studies at a university in Germany and another in Spain.
I expect to need to save about $10,000 for this study exchange and that is why I am hoping you will choose me to receive the inaugural Life in Québec Magazine Fund award.

I would use such an award wisely and with gratitude.’

The Life in Québec Education Fund Grant exists to help promising and deserving students complete post-secondary education here in Quebec.

We know education, and everything that goes with it, can be costly, so we’re glad to help out in a small way.

Those applying had a few simple guidelines to adhere to as follows:

a) You must be enrolled in any program, French or English at any post-secondary educational establishment in the Province of Quebec.
b) If awarded one of our grants, you must show proof of point a) such as including a copy of your payment receipt.
c) You must be a resident of the Province of Quebec.

This year, our first for a awarding a grant, we are giving one person $500 toward the cost of their studies.

Over time we hope to increase both the dollar amount per grant and the number of grants awarded by the Life in Québec Fund.

We can only do this with your help, and to that end, the Life in Québec Fund is supported in the following ways:

1) From donations made by those attending the monthly LAFF Breakfast Club meetings.
2) From a percentage of the sale of used English books that have been donated to La Bouquinerie Anglaise,
a bookstore that sells used English books in Quebec City.
3) Every time someone takes a subscription to Life in Québec Magazine a portion of that goes to the fund.

…………………………………………………………………………

To all those who applied, thanks for doing so.
If you’re still in education next year you can apply again.

Next year’s completed applications need to be in by the end of May 2015.
