Many gather outside Leonard Cohen’s house to remember legendary musician

Montrealers are gathering outside Leonard Cohen’s house to pay their respects to the legendary musician.

A steady stream of visitors have been stopping by the grey stone house to lay flowers, candles and even a fedora at an impromptu memorial on the doorstep.

Cohen was born in Montreal on Sept. 21, 1934, and returned to the city periodically throughout his life.

Many who gathered today say he was always courteous and gracious whenever he was spotted around the city’s Plateau neighbourhood.

Although news of his death only became publicly known Thursday night, Cohen’s biographer, Sylvie Simmons, says a family friend told her the poet actually died Monday.

A traditional Jewish memorial service for Cohen was conducted in Quebec on Thursday.
