Review by Aurélie Tassoni

Based in Québec City, the Celtic folk band Matching Keys (Bill Vincent, Olivier Soucy, Christophe Garenc, François Matte and Martin Racine) offers a clean and modern rendering of traditional Celtic music with their second album, Momentum.

The 11-track album hits all the high points you’d expect. It offers fast-paced jigs and reels that combine traditional instruments – Irish bagpipes, fiddle, flute and bodhran – with modern guitar and a few more eclectic choices that flow into a cohesive whole.

The band particularly shines with original compositions: the eponymous track “Momentum” is an enjoyable highlight, as is “Le Reel de la Vérendrye,” which adds a slight country twang that brings the album a bit of Québécois spice.

Both tunes are instrumental, though the album’s vocals are definitely a strong point in their own right; singer Bill Vincent has a crisp, deep voice that is hearty and mellow without being slurred. It particularly shines in the album’s final track, “La Tour de Babel,” which features flowing mid-sentence language changes.

Some of the traditional tunes on the album seem to lack their own personality, which sometimes makes them hard to distinguish from one another. However, one cannot fault Matching Keys for sticking to a style they have clearly mastered.
