New Cycling Sign – Confused? You Should Be

Quebec – An all-new road sign created by and for Quebec, has appeared along the Vélo Boulevard on Père-Marquette Street.

Do you understand it?

A red triangle to yield passage positioned on a big arrow pointing left. An upside-down bicycle suggesting movement. On another version, there are two bicycles…on the side.

The least we can say, is that there is a lot of information on those metal boards, which are the same size as speed limits.

The new signs appear complex, and must be understood quickly by drivers.

Priority to Cyclists

It’s the same principle as the shared bicycle lane: bicycles have priority over motorized vehicles.

To clarify this priority, certain streets oblige here and there, cars are to change streets to reduce the amount of traffic and speed. The bicycles go almost in a straight line.

The new signs will be installed only at certain intersections with special median. To allow cyclists to move faster, two obligatory stops will be removed in spring 2013 on Père-Marquette and other intersections.
