New Parking Meters on Maguire Making Waves

2014-08-26 Parking

Quebec City (Quebec) August 26, 2014 – Adding to the troubles of many businesses on Rue Maguire, the city’s new parking meters along the street are forcing business owners to be more creative in catering to their car-savvy patrons. One business, a jewellery shop on the street, has gone as far as to leave spare change freely available for people taking their cars to the commercial street.

Since the parking meters were installed in mid-July, several of the historic Sillery street’s business owners have reported a sharp drop in customers. It’s not a far stretch for them to point to the once-packed streets and parking lot – now sometimes at best only half-full even during prime shopping hours – as the cause of their woes.

Maguire isn’t the only street to have received this treatment. Further west, Rue Myrand has also had new parking meters recently go live, to much the same effect – far fewer parked cars.

The city administration, as well as local commercial development groups, aren’t so quick to assign blame. Fewer cars don’t necessarily mean fewer customers, and it’s also important to factor in changes in weather and holiday habits these last few weeks. A more complete analysis of the impact of the new parking meters should be available soon.
