Opération Nez Rouge to Launch Android Mobile Platform

After the success of its iPhone application, used 85,000 times last year, Opération Nez rouge will have an Android mobile platform for the 2012 campaign.

Smart phones allow party people to keep in touch with their drivers.

This is the 29th year of Opération Nez rouge. It will take place from November 30 to December 31 in 110 cities across Canada, including 67 in Quebec.

In 2011, 85,926 drivers chose Opération Nez rouge instead of getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol.

Jean-Marie De Koninck, founder of Operation Red Nose, does not want to break records during the 29th campaign.

It’s the general message – avoid drinking AND driving – that counts.

Since the beginning of Operation Red Nose, the number of deaths caused by drunk drivers has dropped by two thirds to slip below 200.

As for volunteers, the figures are never big enough. In Quebec, it takes more than 50,000 people per year to provide the service. In the Quebec City region, the birthplace of this movement, we talk about 7,000 people involved.

Some nights, at 2 or 3 a.m, when the demand is extremely high, this is where the waiting time increases and more volunteers are needed.

One of the functions of the IPhone and Android allows users to know in advance how long they’ll have to wait for a ride home.

It is also possible to receive text messages showing the progress of the application.

Has the demand been processed? Are the drivers on their way? Where are they at?

Operation Red Nose chose Dominique Maltais, world champion snowboarder, originating from Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, as the official spokesperson for this year.

The 32-year-old told how she had grown up under the influence of humorous Red Nose advertisements.

But it is especially the association with youth and amateur sports that convinced her to get involved.

All donations from customers ($ 1.1 million last year) are awarded to non-profit organizations in each region.
