Peter Gabriel in Quebec City

Peter Gabriel in Quebec City

Peter Gabriel, international artist and great friend of Quebec City’s, very own, Robert Lepage recently arrived in the country ahead of his upcoming North American tour.

The tour kicks off at the Colisée Pepsi on September 16th.

He is accompanied by bassist Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes, and percussionists Jerry Marotta and Katché, the same group who had worked with him on the album ‘So’. They’re back together specifically for this tour.

Gabriel will perform all of the songs from ‘So’, the celebrated allbum released in 1986.

This includes the hits ‘Sledgehammer’ and ‘Big Time’.

The group are rehearsing in the St-Roch area of Quebec City.

Tony Levin said that rehearsals were progressing well and that the whole group will be present at the Pepsi Coliseum on Sunday.

According Tony Levin’s blog, there’s a lot to do to get ready for the first performance.

Not only do they need to be completely comfortable with the songs from ‘So’, but they also need to master other pieces, as Levin pointed out.

There are many photos from their rehearsals on the blog, so it’s well worth a visit.

Quebec City is one of Peter Gabriel’s favorite places to visit. Back in  2002, he came to Quebec to prepare for the ‘Growing Up’ tour.

This was staged by Robert Lepage.

A crowd of a thousand lucky people had even attended a rehearsal at the Pepsi Coliseum.

The Gabriel team have taken charge of the Colisée from now until the day of the show. The band are practicing all week.

Some other notable artists have also been here on more than one occasion: David Bowie, Bon Jovi, and Robert Plant, to name but a few.

More recently, in 2009, Sting held rehearsals in Quebec in the Méduse complex before performing on the Plains of Abraham.

After his stop in Quebec, Gabriel will travel Tuesday to Montreal for a show at the Bell Centre.

Then it’s on to Toronto Wednesday, then to the United States, where he will perform in several cities until October 14th.

The tour coincides with the release of a commemorative box highlighting twenty-five years of the So album, which includes CDs, vinyl, and a DVD of a performance given in 1987 in Athens.
