Phoning While Driving – SAAQ Continues the Fight

Phoning While Driving – SAAQ Continues the Fight

The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) are to launch a new mobile application to continue its fight against the use of phones while driving.

The application will be available for free starting October 9 for Android platforms. It will allow drivers to block calls and incoming text messages on their mobile phones. It will automatically send a message to the other party, warning that the person is in his car and will respond when he arrives at his destination.

The campaign also includes online advertising, TV, and radio.

Growing Problem

Since the adoption of the law prohibiting the use of a cell phone in a vehicle back in July 2008, 173,769 convicted offences have been recorded in SAAQ files.

Men aged 35-years old and under are most often at fault. It is a bad habit to get rid of and it can take time.

Using a cell phone while driving increases the risk of being involved in an accident, some of those fatal, by a factor of 20.
