Plasticians Expo at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec

Does abstract art talk to you? Roald Nasgaard, who had the idea of an exhibition about plastic at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ), the works issued from this foreshadowing movement which placed Quebec art on the international circuit source their strength in line and colour but also in emotion and intuition.

Often, visitors crossed the automated part, but with this exhibition, they are brought in a built movement, geometric, which asks for more audience participation. It is one step more. This historical exhibition will mark history because there are very few events about this time period in Canadian museums.

This step towards works from artists in the 50’s and 60’s is also a prelude to what will be presented in the future room Pierre-Lassonde, which will be dedicated to Quebec artists from the 60’s to today.

The exhibition groups 70 works and about 20 are from the MNBAQ’s collection, which was created with the collaboration of 23 lenders and the Varley Art Gallery of Markham. Mr. Nasgaard and Michel Martin, ex-commissioners at the MNBAQ’s contemporary art, are its commissioners.

The proposed path allows an analysis of the movement’s astonishing evolution, which was a reaction to the automation. Certain artists, such as Fernand Leduc, built a bridge linking the two, but plastic artists (plasticians) were generally young artists, at first influenced by the European currents, and then strongly marked by American art coming from New York.

For those who know about contemporary art, the works don’t have their radical effect which they had at the time when they were created. We have to go back, diving in the social context, between Duplessis and the Quiet Revolution.
