“It was definitely a roll of the dice for me to come here, but each day I’m more certain I’ve won my bet.”

When one-time Olympique de Marseille prospect Hassoun Camara signed with the Montréal Impact, it was the dead of winter of 2011. The previous year, the French-born fullback had left Ligue 1 side Bastia for Dubai only to end up without a club. Back in France, training with his local fifth-division side, Camara was at loose ends.

“I knew I had the skills, but I was starting to question my future,” Camara recalls. “Once I heard about [the Impact] and the plans the front office had for the club, I packed a bag and left.”
