Population of Manawan Entitled to Adequate Ambulance Services

WENDAKE, QC, June 14, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ – The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) supports the actions taken by the Atikamekw of Manawan to obtain adequate ambulance services in the community. Located in a remote area, the community of Manawan is accessible by an unpaved road. The absence of adequate ambulance services in the community perpetuates the isolation and endangers the health and safety of its citizens.

“We support the actions taken by Chief Jean-Roch Ottawa and the Council of Manawan to obtain an adequate ambulance service in the community. The principle of equity in terms of health and ambulance services should apply to all citizens in Quebec. Minister Barrette has a duty to take any action at his disposal to put an end to this persistent discrimination that can jeopardize the lives of individuals”, said Ghislain Picard, Chief of the AFNQL.

To this day, populations in First Nations communities remain among the most disadvantaged in Quebec. Considering, among others, the underfunding in education, the lack of health infrastructure, limited access to housing and the gaps in health and social services, Minister Barrette must realize that an adequate ambulance service is a minimum.
