Quebec City (Quebec) August 13, 2014 – Homeowners in the north-eastern sector of Québec covered by the Premières-Seigneuries School Board will be seeing a slight increase to their school taxes. The school board’s commissioners voted last night for an tax increase of approximately 10%, though actual numbers will vary by region. The school board says this was a hard decision, but following an 8.9M$ cut to their budget from the provincial government in 2014-2015, they simply had no choice.

For owners of a 210 329$ house, which is the average house valuation on their territory, the tax increase should represent an average of 47$.  The school board points out that this only represents 2.8M$ of the 8.9M$ cut from their budget this year, and says the remaining 6.1M$ will be recovered through administrative restructuring.

The school board is in tight financial straights – it is expecting up to 3000 new students over the next three years and needs to build four new elementary schools to accommodate the region’s growing population.

“Our taxpayers must absolutely know how carefully their money is invested for the success of the children studying in our schools,” said school board president Jean-Marc Laflamme in a statement this morning. “We are constantly thinking of ways to save money. Let all citizens of our territory rest assured that our school board will continue rigorous management of public money and preserve, as much as possible, services to students.”

The Premières-Seigneuries School Board administers 36 primary schools, 8 secondary schools, and 7 other specialised or professional education centers.
