Prowlers on the Rise in Quebec

Prowlers on the Rise in Quebec

Whether the fears are real or unfounded; the Quebec police do not want to take any chances on the presence of prowlers near schools Cap-Rouge and Sainte-Foy.

Frequent reports have been made to the authorities about individuals in the vicinity of parks and areas frequented by young people.

Reports are more frequent in the western sector of the city where there appears to be one or more potential suspects who have been shown strange behaviour.

At least three primary schools have been targeted with warnings of increased vigilance. The staff and children of the L’Arbrisseau, Les Sources et Les Primevères, tous and the Commission scolaire des Découvreur should be more prudent in regards to potential prowlers. Last week a possible prowler has offered sweets to a child in a local park.

No paranoia

While we are on guard, we shouldn’t openly accuse older men who walk their dogs.

“A little paranoia is good, but too much is reckless. Last year, a man was taking pictures of children during soccer practice, “said a father of three girls in Sainte-Foy.

Elsewhere in Saguenay, Gatineau, Longueuil and Rivière-du-Loup, similar incidents have caused citizens to react in recent days. Recently a man was caught.

Prevention

“We are trying to prevent this. Children are reporting situations to adults and we want to be proactive. We want to ensure the safety of children rather than saying that there’s nothing to be concerned about,” says Nancy Roussel, spokesman for the police.

No kidnapping attempts or child related crimes have been observed. There are currently no individuals under police investigation. Police patrols will be more visible around schools in order to ensure the safety of children, but also to collect relevant information. Teachers and educators have been invited to participate.

“Do not be afraid, but doing nothing would be a pity,” said the police.

The rules that are often repeated state that children should avoid walking alone and should not answer the questions of a stranger. In the event of an attack, it is best scream and struggle if grabbed. Above all, never get in the car of a stranger.
