QAC To Perform Guys and Dolls – December 2011

QAC To Perform Guys and Dolls – December 2011

Submitted by The Quebec Art Company

The Quebec Art Company will be performing the musical “Guys and Dolls” this fall and is holding auditions for supporting roles and the chorus later this week (see details in the Events Calendar or visit the Quebec Art Company website).

After directing the QAC’s production of “South Pacific” in 2009, Cheryl Rimmer returns to the director’s chair and is excited to have another chance to bring her talents to this genre of theatre.  The company produces a musical only every two years as it requires substantial effort and coordination to integrate music and dance into the show.  Indeed, the company is delighted to have Susan Stewart join as musical director, bringing along her long experience in musical performance, especially in voice and choir.  She will be working closely with Hugh Glassco, another newcomer to the QAC, who will be the accompanist for the show.

“Guys and Dolls” has been on the company’s wish list for a number of years, and it is thus pleased to have gathered together a strong group for the lead roles, including Laura Palladino and Sharon MacLeod in the female roles and Peter Calkins and J.-P. Chartier in the male roles.  Whereas these are mostly familiar faces on the QAC stage, Chartier will be a new one to some as he has only recently returned to Quebec City after a long absence.  In addition, this will be the first QAC singing role for Palladino, a professionally-trained singer.  All are excited to start rehearsals and eager see how the rest of the show is cast.

This well-known musical is based on two short stories by Damon Runyon with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows.

First produced in 1950, it remains among the greatest of the Broadway musicals with over 1200 performances then and many revivals since, including major productions in New York, London and Australia in recent years.  Not surprisingly, it is a love story, but this time it involves parallel love stories set in the New York streets of the Roaring 20s of last century.

Besides the four leads, the play calls for a number of singing and non-singing supporting and cameo roles with a relatively wide range of ages. Although most supporting roles are for men, there is ample room in the chorus for women. And, as always, the company is also looking for people interested in helping off-stage (set, costume, backstage, publicity, makeup, etc.) and encourages them to come to the auditions as well to learn how they might become involved.

For those only interested in seeing the show, the dates for the performances are already set – December 1-4.

Mark your calendars now!
