Quebec Area Librairies to Open Longer Hours

StephenKing_UsedEnglishBooksGreat news for book lovers in the region – our librairies are to open longer.

Thirteen libraries out of twenty-four in the Quebec City area will be open for longer hours.

In total, approximately 100 hours will be added across the different establishments. The libraries are also taking a virtual turn and promise to bring to 30,000 the number of digital titles before 2020.

These are two principle short-term measures in the Labeaume administration vision for the Quebec Library, revealed Monday afternoon at City Hall. Boldness and innovation are also part of the city’s engagement, who wants to acquire 15 times more digital books than the actual 2,000 that are already available.

In the next seven years, Quebec City wants to bring the percentage of subscribers to 40%. At the moment, the establishments have 169,964 users. Many believe that digital will make libraries disappear but the city thinks otherwise.

It wants to take advantage of digital books to provide a more common reading, working, and gaming area. Before, 70% of space was allocated to the book collection and 30% to users; this will be reversed.
